Why is Bristol Food Network starting a support our Bristol Independents campaign?

The Who Feeds Bristol? report has highlighted how the number of independent food shops in Bristol has dwindled in recent years. This decline, alongside the growth of supermarket chains, each with their own self-contained logistics, has in turn put a strain on Bristol’s traditional local supply routes – including the St Philips wholesale market, which supplies the independent sector from Penzance to Oxford to Fishguard.

In response to these findings, the Bristol Food Network has developed a new campaign to help support independent food traders in Bristol.

The campaign launches on 17 September with “Bristol Independents Day”.

If you are a shopper:

  • Download and email recipe postcards for 8 pilot high streets
  • Enter the competition to nominate your favourite local independent food trader (beginning September 17th)
  • Take the good food pledge and email it to a friend
  • Go to an event on 17 September!

We are encouraging everyone to “Try something local, from somewhere local on Bristol Independents Day”.

This campaign celebrates the diversity of independent retail in Bristol and has developed in consultation with Bristol City Council’s retail development, markets, and communications team; Destination Bristol and NHS Bristol. It has the support of the Food Policy Council and Bristol Pound.
